I have heard everything that was mentioned in that discussion more than once on an internship I had. The programs don't mention certain things such as DMA's or that getting the first television job is extremely difficult. One comment was that news higher ups do not understand diversity. The comment about the "right person of color" refers to someone who can connect to all audiences through storytelling, and is skilled in the newsroom.
Media General mentions on all job listings and equal oppourtunity employer, but they own stations in a number of small markets. Belo corporation and Hearst which have stations in mostly major television markets. When you click on the listings, you will get the contact information for the News Director, a few were hispanic and women and likely a few more.
One point is so many people look for oppourtunities on air, that they overlook openings behind the scenes. I think more minorities need to be behind the scenes to change the images that come out of the newsrooms.

I agree, blacks should be more of an advocate behind the scenes just as much as they are on the scene. Having your face on television is seen as "reaching the promise land' so to speak. Blacks have to acquire the essence and stories behind the scene so their intellect can be show through the scene.

i dont necessarily agree that being on television is the highest peak at which u can reach in the sense of your career. because as many people see your face on tv a day how many lives have you actually helped and reached out to through the television alone that you know of?
